Pagan Holiday 2: Mabon

Description

Part 2 of an 8 piece project highlighting the major Pagan holidays of the year, and matching them up with book characters from Tales of the Fatherless.

Mabon (or, for druids, Alban Elfed) occurs on the autumn equinox, roughly September 21. Mabon is a time to reflect on the previous year, when we can celebrate our successes (likened to bringing in the harvest) and assess which crops, projects, or dreams didn't come to fruition. While we celebrate the gifts of the earth, we also accept that the soil is dying. We have food to eat, but the crops are brown and going dormant. Warmth is behind us, cold lies ahead.

There is feasting and merriment as this is halfway through the harvest season and there's a lot to enjoy. Acorns, squash, seeds, nuts, bread, and so forth are pretty traditional.

The balance between light and dark is something I wanted to focus on with this piece. Asdair is the char I've assigned to the holiday, not only because this is the time of year in which he was born, but also because this transition between light and dark is something that reflects on his personal story. He's one of the 'good guys'--striving for equilibrium and peace in the world--but trying to plant seeds of good means you have to tread in the shadow, and he takes that on with a willing heart.
