Beneath the Willows

Mil, from Tales of the Fatherless, an original series. One of the last great seers, he wanders alone as a self imposed exile after hurting the person he loved most. 

The fun tally-mark looking stuff is actually Ogham, an ancient language read from bottom to top (like a tree!) used casually by ancient druids on burial stones and such. I love how it looks, so I used it here both in the background and on Mil's arms. It briefly talks about his story, and on his arms is his full name-- Milleadair--and what the name means, which is totally a secret. Hah. Willows also tend to represent sadness. Also, in the books he frequently sought a stream near where he lived. He would hide under the willows there and nap, sometimes, lulled to sleep by the water.

GUYS I GOT NEW WATERCOLORS! Sad story: Sometime during my recent move, I lost all of my watercolors. This included all of my old tubes plus my huge palette I've had since high school. It's been enough months I'm tired of looking for it, so I decided to upgrade to nicer watercolors anyway. In the meantime, I've started experimenting with oils again and doing digital works like usual...but after the heaviness of my newest oil painting (that I haven't posted yet!) I wanted to go for something airy and bright. 

Furthermore, I have considered recently that I don't push enough in my artwork...sure, I do bright colors and stuff, but mostly what I paint falls into the "semi-realism" bucket, with realistic colors. With this piece I wanted to evoke the emotion of Mil in a way that wasn't necessarily traditional. I hope the colors portray the mood I want!
